Already active for a decade, www.artflyer.net, a cutting-edge network for research and presentation of contemporary art, is now taking on physical form. Alexia Antsakli-Vardinoyanni’s initiative is aimed at engaging visitors with contemporary art, giving opportunities to young artists, and generating a fruitful dialogue between innovative contemporary artists and the Greek public. Participating in the opening show, entitled ‘The Tenth Anniversary’, are the top Greek and international artists and influential figures in the arts who have been featured on www.artflyer.net– including Adel Abdessemed, Ron Arad, Tony Cragg, Urs Fischer, Jacques Grange, Dakis Joannou, Marina Karella, Mary Katrantzou, Harold Koda, Christian Louboutin, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Nicolas Party, Laudomia Pucci, Imran Qureshi, David Shrigley, Kiki Smith, Joana Vasconcelos, Bethan Laura Wood, Erwin Wurm – with a work of art or a personal item that represents them and has decisively influenced their creative expression. It is a type of music that is called “abstract music,” a truly pure form of music that is aesthetic in nature, rather than programmatic. The title itself has been a subject of debate for over 300 years. The most plausible explanation of the title is that the non-harmonic tone, known as a “suspension” in English is referred to as a “baricade” in French. The piece is based on exploiting the suspension as its principle aesthetic. It doesn’t stop there. What is a barricade(Eng)? It’s something that is an obstacle or a structure meant to prevent someone or something from moving from one place to another. Another hypothesis is that a baricade(Fr.) refers to an aspect of female virginity and the title is a double entendre—a really foul one, at that! It’s tuning time for my piano so I thought that I would try an experiment. Tuning systems have always been a subject of debate. The issue here, though is that the piece is written in the key of Bb major. Most tuning systems in use at the time of Couperin would have made the piece sound a bit off. I tuned my piano for this in a common temperament of the era just to see what it would sound like. This recording was done using that temperament, favoring the key of Bb. Here’s what I think happened. Couperin got sloshed on Chardonnay one night and decided to tune his harpsichord to favor Bb major. Then he started screwing around with exploring the possibilities that could create tension and resolution in that key. The next morning, hung over, he wrote down his musings. I think that the “mystery” (in the title) is related to the tuning system. It might sound strange at first, but listen to it 3 times or more and it will begin to make sense. Beware the “wolf” intervals in the “D” section of the Rondo. Enjoy the experiment. Please tell me what you think after you have listened to it at least 3 times.A Special message from Senator Kamran Michael in corona daysThree future basketball hall of famers battle it out: Julius Erving and Charlie Scott vs. Rick Barry! Here's a rare recording of a radio broadcast (on 1050 WHN, New York City) of a game from the old American Basketball Association (ABA). This historic Saturday, February 5, 1972 game pitted the New York Nets, led by established superstar Rick Barry (36 points), Bill Melchionni (27 pts., during a season in which he would lead the ABA in assists), and center Billy Paultz (9 pts.), against the Virginia Squires, led by Julius Erving (31 pts.), already dazzling in his rookie season (before he became universally known as "Dr. J."), and reigning ABA Rookie of the Year Charlie Scott (49 pts.). I recorded the broadcast off the air during the last semester of my senior year of high school, and it's digitized from my original C-120 audiocassette (1 hour per side) recording. This was the final game that the NY Nets ever played at the small and rather rundown Island Garden, in West Hempstead, Long Island, and they played it before the largest crowd ever to see them there (attendance: 6,728; official capacity: 5,200). They played their next home game, 6 days later, at the brand new Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which was also to be home for Long Island's new NHL hockey team, the New York Islanders (who would play their final game there 49 years later, in 2021). After 5 years of playing their home games at the Teaneck Armory (NJ), the Long Island Arena (Commack, Suffolk County, Long Island), and finally the Island Garden, the Nets were moving at last to a major league-quality arena. (In this, their 5th season, the Nets compiled their first winning record, and they went all the way to the ABA Finals, where they lost to the Indiana Pacers in 6 games.) The announcer for WHN is Al Albert (a younger brother of legendary sports broadcaster Marv Albert), and the postgame show is hosted by Bill "The Amazin'" Mazer, with Squires star Charlie Scott as his guest. At game's end, Albert bids farewell to the Island Garden as the arena's PA system plays "Auld Lang Syne." This audio tape includes all of the 2nd half of the game and the postgame show, but commercials were not recorded. I accidentally re-recorded over cassette Side A, so the pregame announcing, quarters 1 and 2, and the half-time show are lost. Also, a tape breakage near the beginning of tape side B caused the first 30-to-60 seconds of Side B to end up, literally, on the cutting room floor after I repaired the cassette so that I could digitize it. (The digitized recording begins with Albert completing a reference to the Island Garden, "which we will be at for half a game more.") SPOILER ALERT (final score): Final score: Virginia Squires 126 New York Nets 117, as the Nets are thrashed by a team led by 2 players hailing from the NYC area.
