Austin Space Day Coverage, YNN The final shuttle mission is beyond us, but tomorrow's scientists are already looking to the future in space. The Austin Planetarium hosted Austin Space Day Saturday. Kids learned how to make space-age paper airplanes with rings and a straw. Five-year-old Orion Rhoades was one of the lucky kids who learned how to make one of the 21st century paper planes. Orion's father Matthew Rhoades said his son became fascinated with stars and outer space after learning he was named after a constellation. "It's really neat to be able to share that with him and kind of instill that curiosity in him," he said. Other kids Orion's age ran across a mixture of corn starch and water and tried to keep their feet dry. "When you are gentle with it, it acts like a liquid," volunteer Judith Reis said. "If you're tough, it resists you like a solid." Beyond the hands-on demonstrations and constellation cutouts, visitors had the chance to learn about space missions and hear from astronaut Rick Linnehan. He has made six space walks during his four shuttle missions. "It's not over," Linnehan said. "We have American astronauts up there, and we will have American astronauts up there for the duration of the space station program." Linnehan says the next generation of U.S. manned spacecraft will return within the next five years either through government or commercial backing, if not both. To prepare for the second era of space travel, the accomplished astronaut encourages youngsters to focus on science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM. "Everyone should have a general understanding of how things work. We're in a technological society," he said. "If you don't do that, you're not going to be able to compete." Efforts are underway now to build a planetarium in Austin.
