Illustration: Johann Grün Johann Ulrich Megerle kam am 2. Juli 1644 in Kreenheinstetten bei Meßkirch (Baden-Württemberg) als achtes von zehn Kindern eines Gastwirts zur Welt. Dem Pfarrer fiel früh die Intelligenz des Jungen auf. Da sein Vater ein Leibeigener des Fürsten war, musste der Fürst in den Besuch der Schlossschule in Meßkirch einwilligen. Sein Vater verstarb 1656 und sein Onkel, Abraham Megerle, wurde sein Vormund. Dieser war als Komponist und Domkapellmeister in Salzburg tätig und war wenige Jahre vorher in den Adelsstand erhoben worden. Er ermöglichte seinem Neffen den Besuch des Gymnasiums - zunächst in Ingolstadt, später in Salzburg. 1662 trat Johann Ulrich Megerle in das Augustiner-Barfüßer-Kloster Maria Brunn bei Wien ein. Er wählte - aus Dankbarkeit für seinen Onkel - den Ordensnamen Abraham a Sancta (oder Santa) Clara. Vor dem Eintritt in den Orden musste er aus der Leibeigenschaft freigekauft werden. Nach philosophischen und theologischen Studien in Wien, Prag und Ferrara war er als Prediger tätig. In seinen Predigten prangerte er vor allem Laster wie Völlerei, Habgier und Trunksucht an. Als 1679 fast ein Jahr lang die Pest in Wien grassierte, lebte Abraham a Sancta Clara in Isolation im Haus eines Landmarschalls, für den er täglich eine Messe las. Damals nahm er auch seine schriftstellerische Tätigkeit auf. Während der zweiten Türkenbelagerung Wiens im Jahr 1683 lebte er in Graz. Auf Wiener Plätzen hielt er Massenpredigten, denen tausende Menschen beiwohnten. Mit Bittprozessionen und vierzigstündigen (!) Gebeten stärkte er den Durchhaltewillen der Bevölkerung. Wien wurde schließlich vom polnischen König Johann III. Sobieski befreit. Er verfasste rund 600 Einzelschriften und zählt zu den bekanntesten Vertretern der der Barocklyrik.
