Clarke’s fair copies (manuscripts ready to send for publication) of other works for viola and piano contain no fingering indications beyond occasional direction for which string to play, supporting the notion that Clarke entrusted those kinds of decisions to the performer. While it’s unlikely that Clarke performed Dumka outside of private gatherings, her fingerings and bowings indicate a similar creativity to those found in her other sheet music; they explore less comfortable regions of the viola, speaking to the high value she and her contemporaries placed on warmth, color, and potency, as opposed to modern performers’ frequent focus on clarity and precision.
