The Date Creek Research Forest was established by the BC Forest Service in 1992 as site for long-term tree- and plant-growth experiments. Originally promoted as a response to the so-called “War in the Woods,” a series of Indigenous-led protests against industrial logging which swept through western Canada in the late 1980s, the site has languished in the 21st century due to the downsizing and dismantling of government-run research institutions and dramatic declines in funding for conservation-oriented research. For one younger researcher conscripted to take over Date Creek and take up its founder’s attachments to the site, the vagaries of government downsizing have magnified the uncertainties entailed in “succeeding” her former mentor as his nominal replacement. As the meanings of the ecological experiments which originally defined the forest have diversified and the site’s infrastructure has begun to decay, both researchers have worked to position their work in Date Creek to highlight the government failure to apprehend the temporal scales of climate change.
