Pedro e Inês de Castro, dama de companhia da sua mulher D. Constança Manuel. Apesar do casamento, o Infante marcava encontros românticos com Inês nos jardins da Quinta das Lágrimas. Depois da morte de D. Constança em 1345, D. Pedro passou a viver maritalmente com Inês, o que acabou por afrontar o rei D. Afonso IV, seu pai, que condenava de forma veemente a ligação, e provocou forte reprovação da corte e do povo. Durante anos, Pedro e Inês viveram nos Paços de Santa Clara, em Coimbra, com os seus três filhos. Mas o crescendo de censura à união por parte da corte pressionava constantemente D. Afonso IV, que acabou por mandar assassinar Inês de Castro em Janeiro de 1355. Louco de dor, Pedro liderou uma revolta contra o rei, nunca perdoando ao pai o assassinato da amada. Quando finalmente assumiu a coroa em 1357, D. Pedro mandou prender e matar os assassinos de Inês, arrancando-lhes o coração, o que lhe valeu o cognome de o Cruel. Mais tarde, jurando que se havia casado secretamente com Inês de Castro, D. Pedro impôs o seu reconhecimento como rainha de Portugal. Em Abril de 1360, ordenou a trasladação o corpo de Inês de Coimbra para o Mosteiro Real de Alcobaça, onde mandou construir dois magníficos túmulos, para que pudesse descansar para sempre ao lado da sua eterna amada. Assim ficaria imortalizada em pedra a mais arrebatadora história de amor portuguesa.
