Basically there are five languages that have either official or co-official status and are widely used in everyday communication, press, radio and TV and education, including not only schools but also universities: Basque, Castilian-Spanish, Catalan , Galician and Portuguese. From the linguistic point of view, Castilian, Catalan, Galician and Portuguese are Romance languages, and therefore typologically very close-while Basque is linguistically totally unrelated to either of them (and in fact, totally unrelated to any other known language). Therefore, Basque shows very unique linguistic features. From the socio-linguistic point of view, Castilian-Spanish and Portuguese are official languages in Spain and Portugal -- besides being official languages of most of the countries of South and Central America (Portuguese in Brazil and Spanish in the rest). Basque, Catalan and Galician, on the other hand, are co-official in their respective autonomous regions (Basque Country, Catalonia/Valencia/Balearic Islands and Galicia). Complementing this unique linguistic situation, the Iberian Peninsula also shows a unique case in the use of MT, in some incidences with a year-long tradition of productive use. MT between Spanish and Catalan is one example. The very high translation quality achieved for this language-pair as well as the support by Public Administrations in the everyday use of Catalan has made this productive use possible, and has resulted in an MT culture (use, integration and postedition) that cannot be found elsewhere. While this success story is being replicated for other Iberian language pairs (e.g. Spanish-Galician, Spanish-Portuguese), the case with Basque is a totally different one. In this presentation an overview of the current situation of MT across the Iberian languages will be given.
