Gans We staan op een boerencamping met de naam Maddybenny bij de Causeway Coast in Noord Ierland, omringd door een verscheidenheid aan scharrel(pluim)vee: kippen en ganzen, pauwen en paarden, koeien en een ezel. Het woord gans duidt eigenlijk een vrouwelijke gans aan. Het mannetje noemt men ganzerik, gent of gander. Ganzen zijn grote, zwaargebouwde watervogels uit de familie Anatidae (zwanen, ganzen en eenden). Ze zijn gespecialiseerd in het grazen en leven meer op het land dan andere Anatidae. Daartoe hebben ze sterke, vrij lange poten, die midden onder het lichaam geplaatst zijn, waardoor ze goed kunnen lopen. Ganzen kunnen tot 30 jaar oud worden, maar ze zijn vruchtbaar vanaf hun 3e levensjaar. Anders dan bij eenden hebben de mannetjes en vrouwtjes eenzelfde verenkleed, maar het verschil is toch merkbaar doordat het vrouwtje een grotere hangbuik heeft dan een mannetje, wat vooral in de broedtijd zichtbaar is. Goose We are camping on a farm-campsite called Maddybenny on the Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland, surrounded by a variety of free-range poultry: chickens and geese, peacocks and horses, cows and a donkey. The word goose actually denotes a female goose. The male is called gander. Geese are large, heavily built waterfowl from the family Anatidae (swans, geese and ducks). They specialize in grazing and dwell more on land than other Anatidae. Consequently they have strong, rather long legs, placed in the middle of their body, which allows them to walk well. Geese can live up to 30 years. They are fertile from the age of 3.
