One day, a few years ago, I was sitting down at my piano and I started to play the melody. That’s when I realized that I couldn’t remember hearing it sung and I didn’t know the words. After a little research, I found a lead sheet for the tune and added it to my repertoire. As with most of the songs I’ve learned, I never deeply studied another recorded version of this song and so this arrangement is not meant to sound like any other. I used an approximation of the left hand piano part (as best I could recall it) as my guitar accompaniment and let the players add what they wanted as they recorded their parts. Drums, bass and piano (in that order) each built upon what the musician(s) before them played. A few technical notes about this set of performances: although this is not a “live ensemble” video, each of the individual instruments (and the voice) was recorded as a complete unedited live take from start to finish. Other than staggering the entrances of the piano and bass (plus removing my last guitar chord), there was no other editing done to the parts; they are played all the way through just as their respective video recordings were made. The only exception is that I used my scratch vocal and guitar video recording at times throughout the edit even though you never hear it on the soundtrack.
