In the Pali it is seventeen verses in length, and in the Sanskrit version nineteen. The Ratana Sutta extols the characteristics of the three ratana (Pali for "gem" or "jewel" or "treasure") in Buddhism: the Enlightened One (Buddha), the Teaching (Dharma) and the noble community of disciples (ariya Sangha). The background story is that the town of Vesali was being plagued by disease and famine; in despair, the townspeople called upon the Buddha for aid; he had the Ven. Bậc xuất gia đa phần vô lậu Hàng tại gia hiểu thấu tuệ tri Tử sanh lão bệnh vô kỳ Xả thân tứ đại an vi vĩnh hằng. Ba tháng sau, tại rừng Song Thọ Đức Như Lai nhập độ Niết-bàn Cỗ xe già cỗi rã tan Tám mươi tuổi thọ duyên trần cáo chung. This means that we human beings are made entirely of worldly passions; we consist of nothing other than worldly passions. In Buddhism, people are referred to with the word ‘bonbu’. Therefore, in Shōshinge, Master Shinran described people as “waku zen bonbu” ―― foolish beings stained with worldly passions. He also described people with the words “bonnō gusoku no bonbu,” which means “foolish beings made entirely of worldly passions.” ‘Bonnō’ is another word meaning ‘worldly passions’. ‘Gusoku’ means ‘made of’.
