Sometimes, when we work on our rigs, a simple task becomes a bit more complicated. While filming a quick tutorial for a serpentine belt and pulley replacement on my 2005 LJ Wrangler, the belt tensioner decided to be difficult and get itself stuck inside the alternator bracket, turning a quick job into a much more involved repair. Since I wasn't able to film the entire process the right way, here are the tools you'll need: 1/2 inch drive breaker bar Torque Wrench 3/8 drive socket wrench T40 Torx bit for the belt tensioner 9/16 Socket for the Idler Pulley Bolt Removing the belt: insert the 1/2 inch drive breaker bar into the square hole on the tensioner and push the assembly to the driver side to relieve tension on the belt. Slide the belt off off of the alternator pulley, then return the tensioner back to its normal position. This should give you enough slack to remove the belt, being sure to note the proper routing of the belt before it is completely removed. Removing the Idler pulley: Once the belt is completely removed, you can use the 3/8 drive socket wrench and the 9/16 socket to remove the idler pulley. Reinstall the new one in the same location, and torque to 35 ft-lbs. Removing the Belt tensioner: Using the T40 Torx bit and your wrench, being very careful not to strip out the bolt head, and remove the bolt. Once removed, take some time to clean up all mating surfaces on the alternator bracket, as this part is known to corrode, and cause failure. Once the surfaces have been cleaned, and any corrosion removed, replace with the new belt tensioner, and carefully torque to 21 ft-lbs Replacing the belt: First make sure you have the correct routing for your vehicle. This will vary year over year, and will depend on if you have air conditioning or not. Reroute the belt as indicated in your service manual as close to complete as possible. Use the 1/2 drive breaker bar again to move the tensioner out of the way, and once the belt is routed correctly, slowly return the tensioner to its driving position. Ensure the belt is in the grooves of each pulley correctly. Start the engine, and ensure that the belt is not wobbling, which could potentially cause belt failure, or for the belt to slip off while driving. I hope this helps. When we speak about third person, we should use “s” for verb. For example: I write, You write, She writes. When I prepare to this video and write this example “I write, you write”, I remembered one interesting scene from a movie. It is old movie “Down by law” from 1986. In this movie Roberto Benigni play main role. Roberto Benigni one of my favorite actor. Roberto play a men who doesn’t know English. So, he play with others with cards, and one of the men start screaming. Roberto ask this men, what is it. Men says that is “screaming”. Roberto say: “Screaming? One moment... open his little book... I have “screaming”” and then he says phrase: “ I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream”. And then they all start sing this phrase. I add link to this scene in description to this video. It was very funny to see this scene. Because, I like Roberto, study English. And this simple phrase at one hand funny and at another hand has a meaning.
