Still very good in my opinion.#adventure #alaska #boatrepairs Final Repairs in Sitka before Winterizing the boat in Petersburg. In August we had secured a Welder to get the Dingy Davit installed. An Electrician to finalize a few more Electrical projects. We had calls in to a Refrigeration company to repair our Cooler and Freezer, and a Diesel Mechanic to do tank work that we hoped to get completed prior to leaving the boat in Petersburg for the winter. We also had scheduled Mellow to see a Vet to see what else we could do to help him recover. As soon as we arrived in Sitka, Mellow saw the vet and we were instructed to continue bed rest and medication to let his back heal before trying to help him walk again. We started working with the Electrician right away to put in the speaker in the cockpit so we could hear the radio over the engine noise and we added a spotlight to the bow as well as pulling out more bad wire. The refrigeration company came and ordered a new system and then installed and set it up. The Electrician installed an inverter for it. We finally found a Deisel Mechanic who had us hire another company to Polish or clean out the fuel tanks which we did, then he put site tubes in for the top fuel tanks, we refilled each tank and marked the site tubes. When he put back on the inspection plates on the tanks he over sealed them with sealant and when we realized the Fuel sender unit was not giving us an accurate reading on our bottom fuel tanks off came the inspection plates to fix the Fuel sending unit and to our surprise or horror we see strips of sealant in the bottom of the tanks….Arghhhh!!! So back into the cupboards and seats we go to clean out the tanks again making sure to get all of the sealant out of the tanks. We also realized that the mechanic didn’t have enough site tube…. So he had shortened the tubes…. The Welder who was the first scheduled for the boat repair ended up not coming until almost the end of our time on the dock and then didn’t install the materials discussed of follow the plan thus the dingy davit doesn’t work. We are so frustrated at this point and the Mechanic had gifted us a horrible cold so we were sick too. Our question is, is it really worth hiring help. We had two fantastic companies help us and two that were questionable at best. Thus learning not to rush finding the right help and to verify with the Harbormaster and locals on their reputation before hiring in the future. We end up being stuck for the remainder of September and had to weather some very windy storms on the transient dock while waiting for everyone to be done with the projects that were started. We are so glad to wrap up preparations for our trip to Petersburg and are anxious to find a good weather window to travel to a safer harbor. We also signed Alise up for the Sitka homeschool program as we were struggling to get the program we had purchased working due to the lack of internet connection.
