How to record good sound with your Nikon D3400 DSLR Camera Hello and welcome to this Camerawize video for the Nikon D3400 microphone settings. In this video we are going to be talking about sound and how to get good sound for your video. Photographers often struggle with sound when they try to shoot video, generally speaking, when they are shooting stills. They do not have to consider sound and as often as not, they are quite loud or they do not take any notice of it whatsoever. And so when they have to come and shoot video and start to concentrate on sound, they can find it quite baffling and actually quite difficult. OK, well first of all let us look at how we can record sound in the Nikon D3400 so let us switch that on and we go to MENUS and SHOOTING MENU and at the bottom of that in MOVIE SETTINGS you will see third down the option for MICROPHONE. If you go into there you will see that we have three options Auto Sensitivity, Manual Sensitivity and Microphone Off. If you set the Nikon D3400 microphone settings on manual then you can set it to the sound of the voice or the noise that you want to record and so consequently if there is a different level of noise either silence or something very loud then the camera won't be distracted by that because it has been set manually for the sound that you want to record. When you go into the back of the camera you will see that there is a level going across the bottom and it goes from minus 40 decibels to zero decibels and there is also one other number on that which is minus 12. Minus 12 is the point at which you want your sound source to peak in terms of loudness. The reason for that is that if it Peaks on that then it can not clip and will not distort. If it goes much above that then you will go into the area where there is distortion. So when you are setting manually you really want to have a test period when the person or the noise or the sound that you want to record is being played and you can set the manual setting so that it peaks at minus 12. When you do that you get some decent sound and it works very well. This Nikon D3400 video from Camerawize is one of a series. Check out the website... Nikon d3400 microphone settings As I have said this does not have an external microphone socket, but it does have a microphone - an internal microphone here - which can be reasonably effective over short distances. You have three options for microphone. The first one is AUTO, which is okay and works reasonably well for ambient sound. The second one is MANUAL, which I would recommend because it gives you more control over the sound that you are recording. And if you are in manual you should be aiming for your sound to peak at 12 so if you can test out the recording beforehand - if somebody is talking, for example, then what you are really looking for is that person, that they are loudest to peak on 12 and you can use the multi-selector to move the sensitivity up or down to ensure that that happens. The final one is to switch microphone OFF and I don't recommend that at all. Even if you don't intend using the sound you have on, the sound on the video is actually a very useful way of selecting Clips when you are editing, so I would have that on even if you are not in fact going to use the sound.
