This chip set has 14 pins in total, where its 7th pin is the ground, and the 14th pin is the VCC. Since the HEX Inverter only takes one input, and of course delivers a single output, it will be easy to identify which pin does what function. The ODD number is an input, the EVEN number is an output, skipping of course pins 7 and 14. Now we shall proceed by generating the HEX Inverter's truth table. We shall name a variable input X, and call its output X', since it is the complement of X what shall come out from it. We will add an extra column for comments. Since we have n = 1 input, using the 2^(n) formula, we calculate that there is a total of 2^(1) = 2 possible combinations for possible scenarios. The first is when X = 0, X' = 1; The second one is when X = 1, X' = 0; Now for the comments description: 1 is the complement of 0; 0 is the complement of 1; It is important to keep in mind that the example uses X as a Variable, it can represent any Boolean expression's output value. Now I shall open a LogiSim simulation to demonstrate our truth table over here. This will be a pretty simple example, all we shall need is a Pin, HEX inverter, and an LED (or Light Emitting Diode). As you can observe, when the input is LOW, the output is HIGH, causing the LED to turn ON. When the input is HIGH, then the output is LOW, making the LED turn OFF.
