It was founded in 1524 by Grand Duke Vasily III for women of princely families and was a part of a chain of monastic complexes that were integrated into the defence system of Moscow. It is an outstanding example of Orthodox architecture and is included on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. At the moment the ensemble is undergoing renovation and construction work is under way, so the place is not as photogenic as it's used to be. However, it is still very inspiring. The Novodevichy Convent territory is surrounded by a cosy little park with a picturesque pond, so the walls of the monastery reflect beautifully in the pond waters. On one of the park alleys a very cute attraction is located: the sculpture of a mother-duck with eight ducklings called "Give Way to the Ducklings!".
