Safety is paramount during paddling! The extent of the equipment I bring obviously varies depending on each trip and its conditions, and which kayak I use. The equipment shown covers a range from basic gear up to advanced trips, in this case a fast touring (less stable) high pressure inflatable kayak, the Itiwit X500 Strenfit. I bought the very green Oregon White Oak from Zena Forest Products outside of Salem. The ribs are 7/8 of an inch wide, 3/8 of an inch thick through the middle section of the ribs and 5/16 of an inch thick at the ends. I steamed the ribs for between 10 and 15 minutes. At the end of the day I had 23 of the 25 ribs steamed into place, having broken 2 of the ribs with the sharpest bends. The boat will be a 17'6" Greenland style skin on frame kayak.
