The Wildcard! The wildcard is an underscore that you type after your primary keyword that you are trying to target. Using the wildcard for your advanced keyword research can give you a more targeted picture of what users are typing into the search bar to better inform your content development. So what if you are trying to rank for a given keyword but that keyword is too competitive? Or what if you are already ranking for a keyword but you are looking to take up more market share? What we do is perform some advanced keyword research as opposed to relying just on the primary keywords. Using the wildcard for a given primary keyword such as “PPC Agency_” will show you the top keyword modifications that Google suggest is showing when users search “PPC Agency.” For example, when we used the wildcard for “PPC Agency_” we saw the options for the modifications “PPC Agency pricing” and “PPC Agency cost.” What is interesting is that we couldn’t see this information when we were using Moz Keyword Explorer or SEMRush. Both sites reported those search modifications had no volume. But the wildcard shows us that when users search “PPC Agency” that they are often modifying their query to understand pricing. What you can do from there is develop content that works towards answering the specific queries of the users, which you were able to identify by using the wildcard. You can then create a great piece of content to rank for that query and generate more leads around your primary keyword. Fine tuning your advanced keyword research with the wildcard is just one way to stay ahead of the curve in our keyword dominated market.
