Two years later, the key concepts of Longhorn rely on still holds, though many things changed. For the last two years, one of the most important things in the cloud computing area is the rising of Kubernetes. As a storage system designed based on the container technology, Longhorn transformed to become a Kubernetes-based storage solution. Kubernetes brought Longhorn many more. At the same time, it also forced Longhorn to adapt. In this session, Sheng will talk about the rising of Kubernetes, what does it bring to the table of storage, and how it affected the development of Longhorn. He will also examine how Longhorn transformed from container based to Kubernetes based, and the changes had to be made to accommodate Kubernetes, and what does it like for the storage developer/vendor to work with Kubernetes." The first implementation relied on a userspace proxy which was not very performant. The second implementation used iptables and is still the one used in most Kubernetes clusters. Recently, the community introduced an alternative based on IPVS. This talk will start with a description of the different modes and how they work. It will then focus on the IPVS implementation, the improvements it brings, the issues we encountered and how we fixed them as well as the remaining challenges and how they could be addressed. For this purpose, an evaluation strategy has been developed suited to determine how these new and emerging standards can best be utilized to leverage existing investments by EU Member States in the INSPIRE implementation. Six data providers from Germany, France and Austria contributed data, staff and infrastructure, and have been integrated during all phases of the project. Together, these data providers manage data from 14 INSPIRE themes. Use cases were defined based on the available data sets and experience the data providers have with their current data consumers; priority was given to those use cases that incorporate APIs, where possible from different providers.
