The goal here was not just to get the cost of portable eyegaze AAC down. Even more important for Max was getting something smaller and lightweight which could stay on his powerchair while he is driving it without blocking his view. We found that the larger medical-grade AAC device he has obscures too much of his view when he is traveling around. (What point is a trip to the zoo if all you can see the whole time is your eyegaze AAC device?) Also, it is bulky; the mount we have for it makes it impossible to swing the device out of the way when transferring Max in and out of his chair or administering medical cares. On top of that, the manufacturer advises it not be used in transit (whereas we wanted a solution we could take with us in the car). A more accommodating mount (unfortunately not covered by insurance) was quoted to us for $1739 (three times the cost of this setup). This setup uses CoughDrop (an inexpensive, open source AAC app), a 10" Asus MiniTransformer 2-in-1 PC ($350 on Amazon), and a Tobii EyeX camera ($79 on Amazon). The EyeX is supported using ATMaker's 3D-printed EyeX positioner (http://thingiverse.com/thing:2098272 - $22 on 3dhubs.com), and the rig is supported and positionable via a Manfrotto Magic Arm connected to an iPow Universal iPad tripod mount ($9.99 on Amazon). We intend to really work with this device combination and see if it holds up. So far we have found: - The speaker is much too quiet to be of use in any setting.
