A side project i made while im still a fulltime college's student. Pretty fun though, always wonder how online gaming work. After a few research, i made one for myself :))). The whole idea of online gaming is just how we sync game state through socket connections. This is a ludo game, so each room represent 1 Publishers hold up to 4 Subscribers. You can implement this syncing logic using some WebSocket like Stomp (Spring), Socket.io (NodeJS). But i would prefer using a multiplayer framework :))), aka Colyseus. The frontend is just pure web, using Three.js for rendering and Cannon-es for physic stuffs. Though using Unity may result in much better performance. In contrast to a Unreal-based solution, the server is able to host multiple maps (levels/shards/layers) simultaneously with low resource consumption. In addition, the server can update many independent maps and their contents in parallel, making optimal use of modern multi-core systems. An outstanding feature of our server is the ability to script AIs with C++20 coroutines.
