Enterprise applications developed for capital markets need to use several push-based messaging patterns for communication between servers and Web-based as well as desktop-based clients. For example, clients may subscribe to a service publishing stock prices, a server may need to broadcast alerts, portfolio managers may need to be informed of specific news and events etc. Unlike the connected nature of communication between services and thick clients, Web-based clients have had to resort to techniques such as timer-based polling using AJAX, WCF duplex communication using long polls, forever frames, Server sent events, and Web sockets to implement the various push-based messaging patterns.
