It uses an interesting card-driven combat mechanism that limits your choices so you do not have perfect command and control. This is as much a deck-building game as it is a turn-based wargame. (This also allows developer Herocraft to turn a computer game into a collectible card game where the cards are digital.) All in all I think it works. This game uses the freemium model: free to download, free to play, and a mechanism to pay for in-game advantages. I see this game as being either grindy or expensive, as you need credits to increase the level of your squad members and to unlock abilities as you increase the level of your squad leader (you). The game can be grindy as you need to repeat missions in order to collect free credits for each mission completed successfully, or expensive as you spend real cash buying credits. Buy 15,000 credits will set you back $20, which is generally the upper limit I set for freemium games. (Which is ironic, given that the subject matter – Warhammer 40,000 – can be a very expensive game to play; $20 is actually nothing in comparison.) The question for me is: how much replay value will the game have before I reach my upper spending limit and it starts to feel too repetitive? In this episode I go over a few of the basic principles of the game while playing out the first mission, Brothers at Arms. Afterwards I look at some of the loot I collected and re-work my deck.
