XDGame: Final Fantasy II Port: GBA Emulator: VBALink v1.8 I started doing the Arcane Labyrinth on PSP and things went a bit out of hand. I was getting spells, items and vitals at a rate that would have rendered the rest of the game too easy. So I decided I will use the GBA version to do normal story work, then do a PSP version where I clear out the floors and Deumios' minions after Like I did with the previous compilation, I will start off the same way: Slaying an Early Captain. The Captains patrol all over Castle Fynn. If you speak to one, they insult you and engage in a battle with you. At this point in the game, they are the most dangerous enemy you can face, but have the highest payoff for this point. After the events of the Cyclone, this monster appears as a general random battle monster on the World Map. PLAN ===== The Captain is vicious. He can easily OHKO a character with a standard attack and uses Bow 3 to target a character for Magic Damage regardless of Row configuration, although it is a weaker attack. In the early game, this monster tends to go first, until Minwu's Agility starts picking up. This battle helps if you have Minwu in your party and you purchase 1 or 2 more Life Tomes from Salamand and add them to the main cast. You will need at least 2 people constantly casting Life on all party members, to ensure that whoever gets slain immediately gets back up; this is a safeguard in the event Captain slays your Life users 1 by 1. Because he is heavily armored for this point in the game, you will need to fight him with Sorcery over the Sword. The other 2 people who aren't constantly casting Life will attack him with Black Magic. Make sure you have enough MP before going into the fight for both offense and defense. The only effective weapon versus this monster is Fists, but you need sufficient training to start dealing damage. Getting in a few attacks between this monster and the Rank 2s in northern Fynn (Land Turtles, Ogres) helps. Another off-hand tactic is you can go north of Fynn and face Ogre Magi. They drop the Sleep Tome by chance and you can use this spell to shut down the Captain for a few attacks. However, you must level this spell past 4 to ensure it connects. You can also use Swap on a busted up Minwu to switch vitals so he gets slain in 1-2 hits after. But you will need it strong enough to overcome his Magic Defense and I don't like playing THAT dirty. REWARDS ========= This monster has quite a few beneficial reasons to fight at this point in the game, aside from bragging rights and challenge: - Big time stat increases. This strategy will ensure quick rising of Magic, Intelligence and Spirit. You can alternate between Life and Black Magic users to ensure balance. Along with this, you are almost guaranteed to gain Stamina and HP from all the damage you will be taking. Not only that, this monster is Rank 5, which improves the odds of gaining stats compared to the local Rank 1 trash or northern Rank 2s. - The drops. This enemy has the Flame Bow and Golden Armor, which are 2 pieces of equipment that are incredibly powerful at this point in the game as common drops. The Golden Armor also makes subsequent Captain fights easier. He also has a chance to drop 2 Tomes: Curse and Toad. Both spells are not accessed until Castle Deist and both serve well for strategist players. With enough levels, Curse will make subsequent fights easier if the enemy is powerful and not Mindproof while Toad can instant kill any non-Matterproof enemy, provided the spell levels are risen enough. It is recommended to get at least some Golden Armors and 2 Curse Tomes: One for a main character and one for Minwu. Curse will be beneficial when you do Soul of Rebirth with him, as will wearing a Golden Armor. Toad and the Flame Bow are entirely optional. STATS ====== Rank 5 HP: 750 MP: 30 Attack: 60 Defense: 50 Magic Defense: 4 - 50% Accuracy: 6 - 80% Evasion: 1 - 60% Gil: 300 - 450 Immune to Nothing Drops: Flame Bow, Golden Armor, Curse Tome, Toad Tome Attack - Standard attack against 1 party member.
