On 15 November 2020 Alberto Zapata was involved in a road accident and lost his left arm. Despite this injury, he refused to abandon racing and excessively trained to return to motocross. Just four months after his accident, in February 2021, Zapata returned to racing and achieved his first podium after losing his arm, on 04 March in Chubut. He scored another podium in Mendoza on 28 March 2021. On Sunday, 04 April 2021, Wey Zapata participated in the round of the Province of Córdoba Motocross Championship held in San Agustín. During the race, he lost control of his bike after a jump and fell down, being struck by two oncoming riders. He was taken to hospital where he died. Zapata's death shocked the Argentinean community. Not only riders and racing organizations, but even the Boca Juniors football club expressed their condolences. His funeral was attended by thousands of people who rode their bikes following his coffin on streets of his hometown of San Juan on the way to Cementerio San Miguel where he was buried.
