Несмотря на ощутимое увеличение внешних габаритов, салон нового «Запорожца» не стал намного просторнее: основной прирост длины приходился на свесы кузова, что сказалось главным образом на «солидности» его внешнего облика, при этом колёсная база увеличилась лишь на 137 мм, а длина салона — на 195 мм, причём эта прибавка пошла главным образом на компенсацию снижения высоты кузова и более низкой посадки водителя и пассажиров, которая требовала больше места по длине. Устаревший силовой агрегат, несмотря на увеличение рабочего объема до 1,2 литров (как у ВАЗ-2101; соответственно вырос и расход топлива — до 9,5 л на 100 км в городском цикле), не дал существенного улучшения динамики, тем более с учётом повысившихся требований к этому качеству автомобиля в семидесятые годы.
