When tourists see Piazza del Popolo for the first time, they are struck by its elegance, harmony and proportion. The impressive architecture, the portico design, the beautiful paving and the well-though-out perspective are the pirncipal endowments of this piazza, certainly one of the most impressive sites in Ascoli Piceno. The piazza is done in travertine and is surrounded by elegant Renaissance-style buildings bearing lively colonnades and decorations. Palazzo dei Capitani fronts Piazza del Popolo in a majestic way, and this magnificent building's name derives from the fact that it was once the headquarters of a powerful Medieval order, the so-called Captains (Capitani in Italian). A series of unfortunate events compromised and changed the Palazzo's original design: a 15th-Century fire caused the destruction of the city archives and the building's facade. Both were subsequently rebuilt and, later, Pope Paul III' s statue and its fantastic portico were added. The construction of Saint Francis's Church took almost 200 years; it was built to commemorate the figure of Saint Francis, who spent several years in Ascoli Piceno. The Romanesque, travertine facade features three finely-decorated portals, s well as the statue of Pope Julius II, positioned on atop the largest. The Church's three aisles boast octagonal pillars, while the majestic presbytery's interior is rich in precious artworks and paintings. The wooden Crucified Christ is among the most famous works of art in this Church; it is located on the left aisle and, according to belief, it once bled, thus attracting hundreds of worshippers and pilgrims every year. Piazza del Popolo is the vibrant heart of Ascoli, the people's meeting point and the venue for cultural events and activities. For instance, the Quintana is an important historical re-enactment with a joust, parade and flag throwing, ladies in costume, archers and musicians that decorate this charming spot every year. Tim and Dave arrived just in time to see our friends, Harvey and Quincy along with myself and 2 fantastic zipline guides standing on top of the tower. This incredible tour takes you soaring across trees, boulders, ridgelines and canyons. The longest line is an amazing 1700 feet! Last is a double wide racing lane where you race a teammate down to a seven story tower, where you must perform an incredible free fall belay jump from the top for the grand finale. I had every intention of tackling this jump like a badass, but that diminished quickly as I stepped to the line and saw that yes, in fact, we are seven stories up. That's high enough to make your booty clinch in a voluntary situation! Knowing what I had signed up for, I took a moment, had a quick little debate with Emily about whether I wanted to do this or not, then let myself melt off the edge, quite unceremoniously. (I had wanted to be all cool and crazy like Yvette, I failed miserably) By the time I realized I was falling, the belay kicked in and I had a split second to understand how cool what I just did, really was. If I could have been hoisted back up to the top and done it again immediately, I would have. 100% Breathtaking Colorado scenery surrounds you, as this all takes place at the end of the Royal Gorge, near the Arkansas River, just outside of Canon City. It's a wonderful hike, despite the additional 15 pounds of gear you are wearing. They do offer a few breaks at water stations and to catch your breath so you are able to enjoy yourself and check out the views. FYI - There are no restrooms out there. You need to go before you load up to drive out to the site. (Check-in is done elsewhere, facilities are there) Our guides, Yvette and Emily were energetic, fun and clearly love their jobs. Even after taking other tours out and performing inspections, they took us out for a 3 hour tour at the end of the day. These ladies made sure to personalize our experiences and checked that everyone felt informed, secure and prepared while having a complete blast. If you're lucky enough to get these gals when you go, I know you'll have a great time. I'm sure Harvey & Quincy will be up for this adventure next time they visit.
