Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most visited, iconic castles in Germany and all of Europe that helped inspire Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland. The castle was built in the second half of the 19th century by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the “fairy-tale” king. After ascending the Bavarian throne in 1864, Ludwig was forced to cede power to the Prussians just two years later. After his sovereignty was taken away, he withdrew into his own world of myths, legend and fairytales and began building Schloss Neuschwanstein in 1869. However, Ludwig ended up sleeping only 11 nights in the castle and the Throne Hall wasn't even completed before his death. Planning your visit: WHERE IT IS: Neuschwanstein is in Bavaria Germany, only about an 1.5 hour drive from Munich. WHERE TO STAY: I recommend staying at Hotel Landhaus Kössel with its stunning views of the Bavarian Alps and close proximity to Hopfensee Lake and the very cute town of Füssen. This was one of my favorite places that I stayed at during this Euro trip and Fussen is only 3 km away from Neuschwanstein Castle. PRICE: Tickets are €16,30 and you should purchase in advance for timed entrance, but like I explained at 4:39, you don’t necessarily need to go inside to get the most from your visit.
