Formerly called Sacopenapã, it owes its current name to the visit of the Virgin of Copacabana, whose sanctuary is located in Copacabana, Bolivia. Located in the South Zone of the city, Copacabana has a crescent-shaped beach and is nicknamed Little Princess of the Sea due to its golden age in the 30s, 40s and 50s. A bohemian, glamorous and wealthy neighborhood, Copacabana gave rise to numerous events and artistic movements, becoming a tourist reference. The neighborhood has a large number of restaurants, cinemas, banks, synagogues (traditionally home to the Carioca Jewish community), shops and theaters. Starting in the 1960s, its growing fame attracted more residents than the area could comfortably accommodate, and Copacabana suffered from real estate speculation until it was filled with high-rise properties with tiny apartments. The place became a Brazilian microcosm, uniting families of different classes in that narrow piece of land between the sea and the mountains. Rio de Janeiro has the second-largest municipal GDP in the country, and the 30th-largest in the world in 2008. The home of many universities and institutes, it is the second-largest center of research and development in Brazil, accounting for 17 percent of national scientific output according to 2005 data. Despite the high perception of crime, the city actually has a lower incidence of crime than most state capitals in Brazil. Rio de Janeiro is one of the most visited cities in the Southern Hemisphere and is known for its natural settings, carnival, samba, bossa nova, and balneario beaches such as Barra da Tijuca, Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon. In addition to the beaches, some of the most famous landmarks include the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado mountain, named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World; Sugarloaf Mountain with its cable car; the Sambódromo, a permanent grandstand-lined parade avenue which is used during Carnival; and Maracanã Stadium, one of the world's largest football stadiums.
